In The Midden, Timothy Bright doesn’t exactly live up to his name. He is the not-very-acute scion of a successful family — that is, until Timothy has his funds cut off.
This sad turn of affairs gives him the desire — although unfortunately not the brains — to get rich on his own. In his devil-may-care way, Tom Sharpe subjects his poor hero to run-ins with the Chief Constable, his wife, her alluring and jealous lesbian lover — and Miss Marjorie Midden.
All converge at the manor house Middenhall, nicknamed “The Midden,” in a frenetic finale with, among other things, policemen disguised as sheep and a mad aunt in a silver cat suit.
The Midden is a rowdy comedy where the characters face situations that are beyond individual´s control.
As far as the events take place, smiles get shape in reader´s face.
A good family young man with gambling debts crosses with the life of a Chief Constable little town by accident.
The corrupt nature of the Chief Constable and the desire for revenge of his neighbour Mrs Midden, takes the facts to a dreadful end where Midden family faces Police troops in Midden private property turned into a battlefield.
The novel is a furiously paced comic novel in which rude behaviours and funny situations come together along with a cast of characters that are so much hilarious. This mixture leads the reader to have a laugh in the unforseen end.
I have enjoyed a shitload by reading an English typical humor novel and I recommend in particular it.
Read it!!
